When Mr. Forbes engaged the poet Dalapatram, to teach him Gujarati, the final question related to the salary the latter expected. In late Nineteenth century, the cost of living was low. Salary of Rs.10 per month was considered princely. Where the poet came from (a small princely state), salaries were paid on yearly basis and Dalpatram asked for Rs.120. Mr. Forbes thought that it was too much and offered Rs.50 per month. Dalpatram readily accepted that.
The poet died rich! It is believed that his son, Kavi Nanalal inherited a lot of cash and spent a substantial part of it in film line and came back broke. When I was growing up in Bhadra, Ahmedabad, I remember two sons of Kavi Nanalal were frequent visitors to the youth group in our area. The younger son often mentioned how his father paid lavishly to actors.

Mahakavi Nahnalal is not lesser then Rabindranath. He equally deserves Nobel for literature.
